Dictionary of Racing Terms:

ADBA: American Drag Boat Association, Inc.

Alcohol: Pure methanol

Big End: The last 25% of the race course

Blown: Supercharged

Breakout: When a boat runs an E.T. that is quicker than the index for the class in which the boat is competing

Bye: A single run usually given to the driver with the top qualifying speed

CSDBA: Central States Drag Boat Association, Inc.

Disqualified: The boat and driver are prohibited from any further runs of any type for the remainder of the race

Driver: Any person or persons who registers at a sanctioned event to drive

E.T. (Elapsed Time): Time taken to run the entire "timed portion" of the course

Eliminations: Where competitors are matched up in competing brackets. Each winner goes on to the next bracket on the tournament chart and runs the winner of the pairing below him, unless a bye run is awarded

Flat: Short term used for Flatbottom boat

Foul Start: The boat has broker the beam of the starting line light sensor prior to receiving a solid green light

Holding Rope: Holding area in water where boats wait their turn to race

Hydro: Hydroplane, fastest of all drag boats

Injected: Means of providing fuel under pressure to the engine

In Ramp: Initial launching area

Jet: A type of boat hull, which in lieu of a propeller, uses a propulsion system which pumps water under extreme pressure and expels it through a nozzle at the rear of the boat

Legal Single Run: Run awarded to a boat if his competition fails at the launch ramp after the final class call

NDBA: National Drag Boat Association

Order of Eliminations: Order in which the classes will be called for competition

Out Ramp: Outloading area, after the run

Pits: Area where boats are gathered out of the water

Promoter: Any individual, group, club, corporation, association, partnership or other entity with whom NDBA or one of its sanctioning divisions or chapters has executed a written race agreement

Qualifying: Timed runs, usually the day before the race to determine racing order

Red Light: False start, caused by misjudging sequence of starting lights which results in disqualification

Red Light on the Course: Course is closed for safety reasons

Rescue Team: A team of certified divers and EMTs manning the rescue vessel during the race

Safety Inspector: The individual who performs safety/technical inspections of each boat and/or driver for further participation. E.T.'s and MPH are not provided to any participant on a safety pass

SDBA: Southern Drag Boat Association

SLDBA: St. Louis Drag Boat Association, Inc.

Sponsons: Parts of the hydro hull; two torpedo shaped floats running lengthwise of the body designed to tunnel air and lift the hull

Starter: Person who operates the starting clock

Unblown: Boat engine not supercharged
